Th. Wood Structure Award 2001

This project is the result of a competition of the Thuringian Mininstry of Finance. The building is located at the outskirts of the small town of Neuhaus in the south of Thuringia. It is placed parallel to a slope, steep enough to access two stories of the building on the ground floor - from the east at ground level the office spaces and from the west the lower floor with garages and other adjacent spaces. The meeting-room and archives are placed in the roof.

The stair case is the focal space of the house - his large glass façade to the west is shaded by fixed blind-structure (steel with wooden blades) leaning on to the house and connecting the inner with the outer space.

The building has a wood frame structure on top of a massive base - this allows for a high degree of pefebrication and reduction of building time. The outer skin (roof and walls) consists of thuringian slate, a material quite common in this rough climatic part of the land.
The dark envelope covers a friendly wooden inside - forming the basic tension of this design. The extensive use of wood on ceiling, walls and floor at the inside dominates the space atmosphere.
