SPORT HIGH SCHOOL
PIERRE DE COUBERTIN
.erfurt

The existing building built in 1975 (a prefabricated DDR structure "TS 69, 5Mp") did not fullfill the requirements of a modern High School. Under the Thuringian School Renovation Program we have planned a basic renovation and an extension.

A hallway, a new part on the north side and extra floors in some parts were added so that the building appears in a completely new shape now including a new circulation pattern. Especially the new main entrance (oriented towards the street before) now faces the school-yard, serving as a common access space for all parts of the sport-ensemble, the dorm, the food facility, the sports hall and our school.

The building´s main feature is the new 4 story air space with an open stair connecting all floors. It is lit through a glass roof by day serves as a communicative space during brake times. The intensive use of a colour scheme in the whole building (including the green rubber floor) and an integrated piece of art on the main wall add to the special atmosphere of this elite sport school.

In the mornings, when the eights are turned on, the buildings inside materials and colours shine through and become part of the outer façade. All class rooms (including the newly built ones) use standard windows which were given by the existing structure - they are divided into 3 parts - we added an asymmetrical vertikal clip element of changing colour (out of the colour scheme) on each window (in-& outside) contrasting with the dark grey plaster planes.
